Active and intelligent packaging

A new review looks at two rapidly developing aspects of food packaging: active packaging and intelligent packaging. Active packaging involves an interaction between pack and food product to extend the shelf life of the product. This is usually by the addition of active agents into the packaging container or film, such as scavengers for oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene, and moisture absorbers. An intelligent pack monitors the quality and/or safety of a food product, providing an indication that can be helpful in the distribution chain. Examples include indicators, sensors, RFID tags and security tags. Active and intelligent packaging (Review 62) highlights the different materials used in the manufacture of active and intelligent packaging, and the types of product to which they may be applied. It includes many examples of products already in the marketplace. The review is priced at £50 per copy (members) and £75 per copy (non-members).

Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP)

Shelf life extension is one approach to supporting reduced levels of food waste. Modified atmosphere packaging is one of the most effective methods of increasing shelf-life and preserving the quality of food. The gases used within the pack are selected for their suitability for food and their effectiveness against deterioration. For example, carbon dioxide (CO2) inhibits the growth of most aerobic bacteria whilst nitrogen (N2) is used to exclude oxygen thereby preventing oxidative reactions. Oxygen itself is used to maintain the fresh red colour of red meats and to maintain respiration in fruit and vegetables. We have extensive pilot facilities and many years of experience in providing packing trials using MAP on a variety of pack formats - the ideal way for determining the correct gas mixture for a food and for ascertaining the shelf-life. Our microbiology team is highly experienced in the microbiology of modified atmosphere and vacuum packaged foods, and can advise on these aspects.
