Water Quality for the Food Industry: Management and Microbiological Issues

CCFRA Guideline No. 27

Legionella in water systems

As the causative agent of legionellosis - which can be fatal - Legionella is widespread in the aquatic environment. Problems mainly arise, however, in artificial water systems and outbreaks have been associated with the cooling towers and hot and cold water systems of industrial and commercial premises. Prevention is best achieved through a risk assessment linked to appropriate control measures.
