Understand and control the hazards of handling oxygen-rich gases for modified atmosphere packing of foods with this BCGA Guidance Note.

The guide was written by a Working Group with experts drawn from BOC, CCFRA, the Health and Safety Executive and the gas and MAP machinery industries. It sets out to establish consistency in design and construction practices and in user operational and maintenance procedures to ensure the safe use of high oxygen MAP systems.

Using a combination of tables and text, the guide covers specific issues such as the hazards of oxygen, the layout and configuration of pipework for oxygen enriched gases, guidelines on cleanliness and workmanship, extraction and ventilation requirements and information on gas displacement machines. A dedicated section then provides specific guidance for users of MAP machines with oxygen enriched atmospheres, covering gas supply systems, oxygen compatibility of packaging materials, and precautions in use, maintenance, storage and transport of oxygen enriched MA packed products.

A list of references is included with information on British Standards, Codes of Practice and relevant current legislation. Appendices provide useful supplementary information
