Get up to date with the latest developments in biodegradable packaging materials to ensure that your products are viewed as environmentally acceptable

The primary function of packaging has always been to protect the product, optimise its shelf life, aid distribution, and provide a marketing medium to promote the product. However, retailers and manufacturers are increasingly being faced with the growing pressure to make packaging "sustainable" and more environmentally friendly. Although the idea of sustainable packaging appears attractively simple, there are many aspects that need to be considered if true sustainability is to be achieved, and real environmental benefits are to be realised. These conference proceedings comprise the visual aids used by the speakers along with brief summaries of some of the presentations.

Among the many aspects considered were what biodegradability and compostability actually mean, consumer perceptions of the terms and the consequences of the differences between the two! This was followed by presentations on specific packaging material developments, how new materials are being used, and environmental and legislative aspects.
