New analytical methods for food safety in barley, malt and beer
Brewing Member funded
There is a constant demand to be able to lower the detection limits for natural products and contaminants, driven by health concerns and legislation. In this ongoing project, the analytical development team work on developing new analytical methods for detecting compounds identified by the 'emerging issues' project.

Processing studies for food safety and product quality issues in malting and brewing
Brewing Member funded
In this ongoing project, the pilot malting and brewing facilities at the Nutfield site are used to identify the risks posed by contaminants or natural products that could pose food safety or product quality issues. The pilot plants allow us to generate mass balances through the brewing and malting process and also to examine a range of process conditions to generate best practice guidance. The work also includes benchmarking, which is carried out on a wide range of commercial products.

Identification and monitoring activity on emerging issues in food safety and legislation
Brewing Member funded
Early warning of emerging issues is an essential to reduce the impact of food safety and legislative issues. This project involves horizon scanning using various sources on information including both technical and government information, and is international in scope. The work is collated into a monthly bulletin which is circulated electronically to brewing Members.

Monitoring and review project: health and nutrition issues
Brewing Member funded
This information-based project keeps a watch on the medical literature on health and nutrition publications related to beer consumption. Key papers in this area are selected for review, and the review is circulated every two weeks by e-mail. Topics covered include health issues (obesity, type-2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke) and also cover raw materials (hops, malt) and their links to nutritional issues such as antioxidants and fibre.

Food safety and regulatory issues database and briefing notes
Brewing Member funded
Rapid access to information on food safety and regulatory issues is an essential part of controlling risk. In this project, such information gathered from a variety of international information sources is collated into searchable databases. In addition, briefing notes on key topics are generated and are made accessible to brewing Members.

Food safety review of UK cereal grain for use in malting, milling and animal feed
HGCA funded (July 2009 - June 2012)
This project aims to ensure that UK grown cereals are safe for human consumption. Cereals destined for malting, milling and animal feed are analysed to produce robust and cumulative data on the incidence of key contaminants including mycotoxins, pesticides and heavy metals. A watching brief is maintained on emerging issues and legislation which could impact on the safety of cereal-based foods or their acceptability in key markets and, where appropriate additional testing is undertaken. In addition studies on the incidence and fate during processing of certain contaminants, such as ergot alkaloids and "masked" mycotoxins, are being carried out.
