Is it permitted?

Establishing the legality of specific ingredients and processes is an essential part of product innovation, and one with which we provide considerable reassurance to clients. From ascertaining whether a particular ingredient or process might be considered 'novel' by the authorities, to advising on the foods in which an additive can be used and at what levels, our team of food law specialists have helped companies to get it right first time. Dr David Leeks from the Legislation section explains:

"With more than 75 years of combined experience, gained in industry, trade associations, official laboratories and enforcement, our advisers regularly help product developers understand and interpret legislative controls relevant to their particular products and developments, at any point in the development cycle. Confidentiality is assured including when, with client´s permission, we are able to consult with the UK Food Standards Agency or other authorities on a 'no names' basis as part of our thorough investigation of all relevant issues.

Towards the end of the process we often check label artwork, including advising on potential claims and descriptions and on allergen labelling. With our knowledge of pending changes we are also in a position to advise on wording which ensures that labels stay legal for longer."
