Sustainable packaging

In the quest for sustainable packaging options - including biodegradable and compostable materials - our expertise has helped companies to make the right choices. Understanding the packaging, the food and the interaction between them enables us to assist in all areas of the development and implementation of sustainable packaging for food products. Our activities cover food contact assessment (e.g. migration and taint analysis), performance of new packaging materials (e.g. barrier properties, seal assessment), compatibility with processing and packaging equipment, consumer acceptance studies, advice on legislation and provision of up-to-date information.

Tailored support for companies was accompanied by more general guidance, provided through the review 'Sustainable food packaging: biodegradable and compostable options' (CCFRA Review No.56) and the conference 'Sustainable food packaging: current biodegradable and compostable solutions' held in 2007.
