Melamine analysis

Melamine analysis services from Campden BRI

Campden BRI's rapid and sensitive method for determining melamine and cyanuric acid levels in food uses LC/MS/MS and has a Limit of Quantification of 50ppb, much lower than the legal threshold for melamine in food products.

Melamine is a substance used to make plastics and fertilizers and should not be present in food. In combination with cyanuric acid it can lead to kidney failure, through crystal formation in the kidneys.

Melamine is known to be deliberately added to food products to boost its apparent protein content. The European Commission has ruled that any product containing more than 2.5mg/kg melamine must be withdrawn from sale and destroyed.
