Mullen burst test and edge crush test

Burst test

When choosing tertiary packing boxes for storage and distribution, it may look like a relatively simple task: choose the appropriate size, load, tape up and dispatch. However, cartons come in a range of thicknesses and flute types, which relate to the strength and durability of the carton: too weak may lead to damage and too strong means expense that may not be required. Mullen burst testing and edge crush testing, which are part of our transit testing or distribution testing services, can assist with choosing the correct carton for the job.

The Mullen burst test is a measure of the force required to rupture or puncture corrugated board. This force is indirectly related to the pack's ability to withstand internal and external forces and protect its content during storage and distribution.

Edge crush test is linked to stacking strength. It is a measure of the edgewise compressive strength of corrugated board. A small piece of a carton is placed between two platens and compressed perpendicular to the direction of the flutes.
