Why attend:
By attending the course, staff new to microbiology undertake a wide range of microbiological procedures essential to the assurance of food safety. They will acquire the skills to perform routine tests from practical exercises undertaken within CCFRA‘s fully equipped laboratories guided by highly skilled staff. A series of short lectures, together with comprehensive course notes covering all aspects of food and drink microbiology, will ensure that delegates understand the theory behind the practical, and have essential text for future reference. The course is also beneficial to staff who need an appreciation of how microbiology testing is done at a basic level.

Course content:

  • Microorganisms – types, diversity and key factors for their control: an introduction
  • Isolation and enumeration of microorganisms from food
  • Inhibition and destruction of microorganisms
  • Food poisoning
  • Food spoilage
  • Media preparation (demonstration)
  • Equipment in the laboratory maintenance and correct use
  • Practicals
    – sample preparation and analysis
    – identification of microorganisms
    – enumeration of microorganisms
