Food and nutrition for an ageing population

Please contact Training for more information.

Overview

The UK population is ageing, by 2011 it is forecast that one in six people in the UK will be over 65 years old and by 2025 the number of people in Britain over 60 is predicted to outnumber those under 25. It is essential that we understand what both today´s and tomorrow´s retirees will be expecting from the UK food and grocery industry and have the knowledge and tools to meet these requirements with innovative new food products.

As we age, our nutritional needs, appetite and even our sense of taste and smell change and so the food purchased by consumers must be able to address these needs. There is a desire by this sector of the population to prolong their healthy active years and they are increasingly looking for food products which have been scientifically proven to reduce the risk of age-related diseases.

Why you should attend

This seminar will provide an overview of the requirements of the ageing population from their changing nutritional and health needs, to their aspirations and behaviour as consumers. It will examine how these requirements can be met and also explore the potential for food products to reduce the risk of age-related diseases in such areas as digestive health, immune function, cognitive decline, and eye health. An overview of some relevant scientific studies will also be given.

Who should attend?

The seminar will be of benefit to food manufacturers looking to meet the challenge of designing food for an increasingly ageing population. It would be of particular interest to food technologists, company nutritionists, product developers as well as marketing functions such as brand managers.

"As people grow older their priorities, eating habits, and appetite change as well as their nutritional needs. Food manufacturers must be able to design innovative new food products which are tailored to meet these changing needs."
